About Kauai Ballet Academy

Building off the legacy of Kauai Dance Center, Kauai Ballet Academy strives for excellence in training dancers of all ages. Founded in 2019, KBA serves the entire island of Kauai providing a variety of classes at four locations. Each year performing a repertoire of Classical Ballet pieces, Hip Hop, Spanish and contemporary dances.

Hilary Johnson

Studio Owner

Hilary began dancing at age three at White Shoes Studio in Salt Lake City, Utah. She continued her training as a teenager at Linda Fenton Ballet Studio, with a focus on Classical Ballet. She was a member of The Utah Junior Ballet Company performing various roles in The Twelve Dancing Princesses,

The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia and danced the role of Snow White in the company’s performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Throughout college she continued her dance studies, spending time in New York City taking classes at the American Ballet Theater, Joffrey Ballet, Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway, as well as spending a semester in Cuernavaca, Mexico studying Ballet Folklorico.

Hilary began teaching in 2001 and has taught students in Utah, Maine, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and the Marshall Islands. In 2019 she developed a dance outreach program for underserved children on Majuro Atoll, culminating with a ballet and hip hop performance featuring over fifty dancers.

She taught at Kauai Dance Center from 2012-2019 studying RAD under the direction of Jennifer Bell Grey.

She founded Kauai Ballet Academy in 2019 with a desire to build off the legacy left by Kauai Dance Center.

Hilary is passionate about preserving classical ballet and continuing to provide a variety of dance forms to students on Kauai. 


Jennifer Bell-Grey

Artistic Director

It was in Hong Kong that Jennifer, at three years old, began her life of dance. Born in California, she spent her early years on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, Hong Kong, Thailand and England. Jennifer began her first full-time professional training at the Legat School of Russian Style Ballet, and soon after, at age eleven, won a position at the Royal Ballet School in London, England.

Educated by world-class teachers, Jennifer performed at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden with the Royal Ballet Company. She danced for members of the English Royal family, as the School’s patrons including the late Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth.

Jennifer’s extensive training involved the study of a wide spectrum of dance genres, including ballet, contemporary dance, jazz, hip hop, and Spanish dance. She studied music, theatre,& art. National folk dances were also a part of Jennifer’s studies, with emphasis on the countries of Russia, Poland, Hungary, Germany, France, England, and Ireland.

In 1998, Jennifer graduated and obtained her diploma from the Royal Ballet Teacher’s Course and the Royal Academy of Dancing.

A winner of several prestigious choreographic awards, Jennifer has created arrangements for White Lodge Royal Ballet School and the Royal Ballet Senior Summer School program, as well as theatre productions like Fiddler on the Roof.

Upon returning to Kauai, Jennifer founded Kauai Dance Center with Mel Bell-Grey. KDC provided dance instruction to hundreds of students on Kauai for over 20 years.

In Hawaii, Jennifer has performed as a soloist with Guest Ballet Company “Ballet Hawaii” in The Nutcracker and has worked with local artists, musicians, and promoters. She received the “Best Dancer” award by People’s Choice in 2006.

Sara Day

Master Teacher

Sara Day specializes in training ballet dancers in the Vaganova Method.  After several years dancing with such ballet companies as Ballet Pacifica, Joffrey, and San Francisco Ballet, Mrs. Day acquired her Vaganova Pedagogy Degree from Hungarian National Ballet.  Since then she has trained dancers to success at the prestigious Maple Conservatory in Irvine, CA as well as South Coast Conservatory and her own school, American Ballet and Conditioning.  Fostering a love of the artform with precision and dedication, her students have gone on to dance in major companies worldwide and have been awarded scholarships at a plethora of the elite training programs.
